Seedream and Seedance — how to try ByteDance's image and video AI for free, and what signup really needs
There's no single "Seedream free trial" to claim. Seedream (image) and Seedance (video) are ByteDance's models, and access runs through their apps and API. What's free is a daily credit allowance that resets. The part that catches people out is the gate: the Chinese consumer apps verify by phone number, the international routes verify by email, and the versions have iterated fast (Seedream 4.0 and Seedance 2.0 by 2026). What Seedream and Seedance actually are
Seedream is ByteDance's image-generation model and Seedance its video model. They're the engines inside the Doubao assistant and the Jimeng (即梦) design app, and they're offered to developers through the Volcano Engine API. There's no standalone "Seedream account": your access and your generations live in whichever app or API you signed up through, which is why the signup details matter more here than usual.
How the "free trial" actually works
- Doubao app: daily free credits for generation, refilled on a schedule; the exact amounts change often and are announced in Chinese.
- Jimeng (即梦): a credit balance with a free daily allowance plus paid packs when you want more, the same model ByteDance uses across its creator apps.
- Volcano Engine / Ark API: the developer route. New accounts get trial credits, then it's pay-per-use. This is where automation and bulk generation live.
- Official web playgrounds have appeared and been retired as versions shipped, so check what ByteDance is currently offering rather than trusting an old tutorial.
There's also a third category: third-party apps that wrap the models with their own free quotas. Dola is a popular example. Those come with their own signup gates, which we cover separately.
One caveat worth stating plainly: these terms are moving targets, documented mostly in Chinese, and free allowances get tightened. Everything on this page was true when we checked it. Confirm the current numbers in the app before you plan around them.
The bit that catches people out: the signup gate
ByteDance's Chinese consumer apps verify by phone number. The code arrives by SMS and there's no email path at all. The international versions sign up by email or Google. Most tutorials don't tell you which one you're in until you're already there, so check before you start. If the form is asking for a phone number, that's the gate, and no mailbox is part of the answer.
Where a mailbox does and doesn't fit
- On the email-based international signup: a fresh address on a private domain can pass the form. But your generations and your credit balance live in the account, and most rented mailboxes are public viewers, so anyone who knows the address can read your password-reset link. A 24-hour throwaway also dies mid-credit-cycle.
- On the phone-gated apps: a mailbox is irrelevant. This is a "don't buy anything" case. No address gets you past SMS verification, and anyone telling you otherwise either hasn't tried it or isn't being straight with you.
What to use instead
1. You just want to try generating once
Use the free daily credits with your real email or Google sign-in and don't buy anything. A week of casual generation isn't worth a rented mailbox, and on the phone-gated apps a mailbox wouldn't help anyway.
2. You want the account and your generations to survive
On the email-based routes, the account holds your history and credits, so the email on it has to outlive the month. A permanent mailbox you control is the right fit: real credentials, its own recovery address, IMAP or POP3 access if you're automating. It costs the same as a throwaway.

3. You're going down the API route
Volcano Engine is a developer account. It will eventually want real identity and a payment method, and the email is just the login. A mailbox is fine for the email itself, provided it's one you control, but don't mistake the mailbox for the gate. The gate is the developer verification and the card.
