Can you use a temporary email for AI tools? A verdict for each one
It depends on the tool, and the split is sharper than most roundups admit. Email-gated services (ChatGPT, Claude, Grok) accept a fresh address on a private or trusted domain and refuse the famous disposable ones. Phone or Discord-gated services (DeepSeek, Midjourney) don't care about your email at all. Google is the strictest of the group. Below, a verdict for each tool, the pattern underneath them, and where a mailbox actually helps.
The checks themselves are the ones in our guide on why signup forms reject temporary email. AI services just run more of them, because their users are the exact people who reach for throwaway mail. For the ChatGPT row specifically, see what OpenAI actually checks.
Why AI tools are stricter than normal signup forms
Disposable email is the most-abused category in AI: free credits, trial farming, and ban-evasion all run on fresh addresses. So AI services check everything from the first attempt:
- Disposable-domain blocklists. The famous free services are refused outright.
- Domain fingerprinting. Age, missing SPF/DKIM, MX infrastructure that already hosts throwaway mail.
- Post-signup verification. The account has to stay readable, or it gets flagged as abandoned.
The per-tool verdicts
| Tool | How signup works | Temp email? | What fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT (OpenAI) | Email; disposable list enforced | Famous domains blocked | Trusted mailbox or real email |
| Claude (Anthropic) | Email + verification | Same blocklist practice | Trusted mailbox or real email |
| Gemini (Google) | Google account | Strictest; phone verification common | Your real Google account |
| DeepSeek | Phone number | Irrelevant — SMS is the gate | Nothing mailbox-related |
| Midjourney | Discord or Google | No email verification at all | Your Discord account |
| Grok (xAI) | Email or Google | Fresh domains work; must stay readable | Mailbox with IMAP access |
| ElevenLabs | Email + verification link | Famous domains fail verification | Trusted mailbox or real email |
The pattern, in one line
Whatever the tool, the gate decides everything. If the gate is an email that has to receive codes and stay readable, you need a mailbox that survives, not one that just gets past the form. If the gate is a phone number or a Discord account, a mailbox is irrelevant, and nobody should be selling you one for the purpose.
What to use instead
1. You want the account and your history to survive
An AI account holds your prompts, generations and custom instructions. What you lose when a throwaway dies isn't the login, it's the work. A permanent mailbox you control costs the same and is still there when you need to prove the account is yours.

2. You're testing a tool once
Don't buy anything. Several of these services are usable without an account for casual questions, so check the tool's current policy first, and for a genuine one-off your real email carries no risk at all. A rented address adds risk, not privacy, for a test you'll abandon by Friday.
3. You're signing up for something with money attached
A paid plan is tied to the account, and the account is tied to the email. The moment that address stops working, the paid account becomes unrecoverable. The card that pays is separate from the email that logs in. Use an address you control, period.
